What does Bauernhof Siebeneck mean anyway?

Bauernhof Siebeneck is the German rendition of "Seven Oaks Farm". Bauernhof can be translated as "Farm" and Siebeneck is a German dialectal form or variant spelling of Siebeneichen, which means "Seven Oaks".

Bauernhof Siebeneck is a mid-nineteenth century heritage farm located in the nationally recognized historic district of Rocheport, Missouri. The main dwelling is registered in the Rocheport Historic District as the Grossman-Pipes-Hollon House. A portion of the farm lies in the Missouri flood plain and is bound by the muddy banks of Moniteau Creek or the Creek of the Great Spirit. Bauernhof Siebeneck is just a stone’s throw down the street from Abigail’s and The Rocheport General Store.

In 1804, President Jefferson commissioned Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the newly acquired Louisiana Territory via the Missouri River; it was the advent of Manifest Destiny. On June 7th of that year, the Expedition came ashore in the area now known as Rocheport. Clark penned in his journal about the beauty of the flora and the abundance of fauna. He also made note of the petroglyphs or mantious visible at the mouth of Moniteau Creek.

In September of 1806, Lewis and Clark revisited the area which is snugly tucked away between the Mighty Missouri River and Moniteau Creek. Subsequently, settlers moved to the area, and a town was established in 1825. Steamboat commerce along the river promoted the rapid growth of Rocheport, which burgeoned into a significant river town.

At the bend of the Moniteau, Bauernhof Siebeneck rests shaded under cottonwood, maple and walnut trees. Some of those residing on the farm include Hans im Glück and his gaggle of egg-laying consorts in the chicken house, a flock of English Rollers and Homing pigeons in the coop and a Golden pheasant in the newly-built aviary situated next to the goldfish pond.

Bauernhof Siebeneck also hosts an ever-multiplying grove of fruit trees as well as a lovely assortment of perennials, annuals, herbs and organically grown heritage vegetables. Behind the house one finds a curiously-patterned field carved by the turbulent hands of the Big Muddy and known by many these days as The Crop-Circle Field.

A notable addition to the farmhouse is the Bookstore and Art Gallery, located in the front section of the main house. Bauernhof Siebeneck Books carries antiquarian, vintage, and rare books, as well as those from all genres. The bookstore specializes in Missouri and German-American titles and features works of art in various media by Timm Siebeneck. Additionally, the barn has a rustic yet must-see art gallery hand-built by the owner.
